It's training that has its roots in the gentler method of horse handling first brought to the public through a man named Tom Dorrance. It's a way of training that doesn't involve force or pain but rather, presenting the horse with an idea and letting him figure it out.
It's been referred to as Natural Horsemanship, yet there's nothing natural about a horse learning not to listen to his natural instincts. In other words, you want to teach your horse to stand still when he's afraid (nature says, BOLT!) and to relax and give in to pressure, from the rein/bit/rider's leg, etc.... (nature says, pull away or push against pressure).
When applied correctly, consistently with enough repetition, it's a way to communicate with the horse what you want, when you want it, teaching the horse a cue.... what is expected of him, so he understands to trust and respect you in order to find what he wants most out of life... peace.
What makes John Lyons method so useful, is that it can be passed along to the client. It's training for the owner as well. Anyone may apply the training once learned how and it's easier than you might think.
